IT'S been another amazing year for sport in Glasgow - and today is your last chance to nominate your local sporting heroes.

The 2015 Glasgow Sports Person of the Year contest is set to be amongst the toughest yet after one of the most successful years in the city’s sporting history.

The nomination process for the annual awards ranges across 12 categories including Sports Person of the Year, Young Sports Person of the Year, Student Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year, Disabled Athlete of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. Glasgow’s Lord Provost Councillor Sadie Docherty will also present an award.

The awards celebrate the achievements and endeavours of sportsmen and women and organisations from across Glasgow and Scotland, as well as recognising the successes of the country's leading sports stars during an incredible year for the city.

In recent months Glasgow has played host to the IPC Swimming World Championships, two sell-out Davis Cup ties and the European Judo Open.

Earlier this month, the curtain fell on the World Gymnastics Championships which were hailed by FIG President Bruno Grandi, president of Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) as “better than the Olympics.”

While celebrating the successes of our very best elite athletes the awards also focus on the vital role volunteers and clubs are playing in engaging with local communities to develop sport and encourage physical activity.

Glasgow Lord Provost Councillor Sadie Docherty said: “Fresh from delivering he best ever Commonwealth Games, Glasgow has risen to the challenge once again during what has been an incredible year of sport.

"But it hasn't just been about elite sportsmen and women. Right across Glasgow, our grassroots sports clubs, volunteers and coaches have been flying the flag for our city. These awards will celebrate that fact."

Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor Archie Graham, said: "Glasgow is in the midst of a golden era of sport, staging some of the world's biggest events in our world-class venues.

"Sport can change lives and we are seeing that in communities across the city, with participation levels at record levels. Local clubs are the lifeblood of sport - they help nurture the next generation and that is exactly what these awards are all about."

The closing date for nominations is today.

The awards are all open to sports stars and clubs with a connection to Glasgow - and any Scottish sports personality is also eligible for nomination.
