DETECTIVES are today working to establish the motive behind a shooting outside an Irish Republican Folk gig.

Police are desperate to trace the mystery gunman who opened fire in the Gallowgate as the Wolfe Tones were playing in the Barrowlands.

The alarm was raised by members of the public who heard "loud bangs" at around 9.50pm on Saturday.

As reported in late editions of yesterday's Evening Times, forensic police were called in to comb the scene and carry out finger-tip searches.

Insiders said the motive behind the incident could be "key" to tracking down the gunman.

Police said the Gallowgate would have been busy at the time and urged any witnesses to come forward.

Celtic supporters are also known to the frequent pubs in the area, due to the club’s close proximity to the Gallowgate.

The Parkhead side had earlier played a home match against Kilmarnock, meaning the area would have been busy with football and music fans.

Detective Inspector Gillian Patrick, said: "Inquiries are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding last night’s events.

"Officers, including specialised search and forensic teams remain in the area to speak to local residents and businesses.

"There was a concert in the Barrowlands last night, and the Gallowgate was busy with revellers enjoying a Saturday night out.

"It is possible that other members of the public may have heard something just before 10pm.

"If you have any information that can assist, I ask that you contact officers at London Road on 101."

The Wolfe Tones are named after an 18th century revolutionary, Theobald Wolfe Tone, who is regarded as the father of Irish republicanism.

The band are popular among Celtic supporters.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
