GIRL groups are working together to help raise cash to tackle domestic violence.

Glasgow band Teen Canteen has organised a night of music at city cafe Mono to support Scottish Women's Aid.

A line up of 12 pop groups will each choose girl band covers to play at Thursday night's event.

And Belle and Sebastian has donated prizes for a raffle on the night - including a limited edition signed print and signed albums.

The evening has been organised by singer Carla Easton, from Teen Canteen, who has already hosted a successful women's aid fundraiser in Edinburgh.

Carla said: "Picking the theme was very easy for me. I have been an avid collector of girl-groups for the last ten years, exploring their significance within the history of popular music academically during my Masters of Fine Art.

"To me, the two went hand-in-hand together - raising money for Scottish Women's Aid by promoting girls making music. And so the Girl Effect came about.

"In May we raised £3456.72 for Scottish Women's Aid.

"I'd love to live in a world where organisations such as Scottish Women's Aid - wonderful as they are - don't need to exist because as a society we had managed to end gender inequality and we'd been able to treat and stop the causes of domestic abuse."

The concert, on November 26, is part of the annual 16 Days of Activism to end Violence Against Women and Girls – a UN campaign that is now in its 24th year.

It features Scottish pop group BMX Bandits, Sony Marvello, Randolph's Leap, the Cairn String Quartet and a host of others.

A Scottish Women’s Aid spokeswoman said: “We are very grateful to Carla for all the work she has put in to this concert, and for the support of all the musicians involved.

“Our research shows that on just one day in Scotland last year, 383 women and 302 children and young people were living in a Women’s Aid refuge, and more than one thousand women, children and young people were supported by Women’s Aid in Scotland.

“Nearly all needed practical support with issues such as finding long-term housing, safety planning, finances, and access to legal protection. Most also received emotional support.

“The money raised will help us play our vital role in campaigning and lobbying for effective responses to domestic abuse, and provide advice, information and training to our 37 member groups.”
