Think you hate Brussels sprouts?

An Italian restaurant is hoping a new addition to their festive menu will change your mind.

Pizza Express has created a new variety of its trademark treat topped with the quintessential Christmas veg.

The chain has created two varieties for meat lovers and vegetarians with sprouts roasted in rosemary and garlic.

Claire Calpen, assistant manager at Pizza Express, Byres Road said: “There has been quite a bit of interest so far.

Glasgow Times:

Step 1: A bowl of roasted sprouts ready to become a pizza topping

“There tends to be people who turn their noses up but the pizzas are doing really well and we are selling quite a few every day.”

But will it get the thumbs up from festive revellers at the new Pizza Express restaurant in Byres Road?

Who better to judge than six hungry students from nearby Glasgow University.

James Robertson, 20, a second year law student said: “It tastes like Christmas. It’s delicious.”

Julia Kuegerl, 20, also studying law, tried the vegetarian option which comes with mozzarella, mushrooms, pine kernels, tomato and egg and finished with Gran Milano cheese and truffle oil.

Step 2: The sprouts are sprinkled on top of the base with sauce and mushrooms

She said: “I’m not a fan of sprouts but it’s really, really good. I’d eat this even if I wasn’t a vegetarian.

“I can taste the sprouts but it’s not overpowering.”

Ross Lennox, 19, said: “It’s really nice. You couldn’t taste the sprouts massively.”

However the pizza wasn’t such a hit with Plamena Lalova, 20, a second year psychology student from Bulgaria.

She said: “It has too much on it.”

Step 3: With cheese, red onion and an egg, this Christmas feast is ready for the oven

Boyko Radulov, 20, also from Bulgaria and studying computing science said: “One of the herbs is too strong.”

But the seasonal pizza hit the mark with Tim Short, 20, a second year law student, who said: “It doesn’t taste like an unusual mix.”
