The British public backs air strikes on Islamic State (IS) in Syria by a margin of 48% to 30%, according to a poll.
But research found the remainder are undecided - and 59% believe the move would increase the risk of terrorist attacks in this country.
The figures emerged with Labour bitterly divided over the issue, which David Cameron could put to a vote in the Commons as early as next week.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has indicated he opposes military action - but a majority of his shadow cabinet is thought to be in favour.
The poll - carried out around the time Mr Cameron set out his case for action to MPs - suggests there is 46% support for air strikes among those who backed Labour in May's general election, compared to 35% against.
