A woman returning from her son's wedding died after the taxi she was travelling in collided with a car being pursued by a police van, it has emerged.

Police have named the 57-year-old woman who died at the scene as Mary Laurie – also known as Marie - from Easterhouse.

A statement released by police on behalf of the family said: “She will be sadly missed by all the family.”

A 52-year-old man, who was in the taxi with Mrs Laurie, was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and remains in a serious but stable condition.

A 50-year-old man who was driving the taxi suffered minor injuries, as did a 20-year-old man who was driving the Vauxhall and a 16-year-old woman who was also in the car.

A police source, who asked not to be named, said: “We were pursuing the vehicle when it crashed into the taxi.”

The green Vauxhall Astra hit a black taxi at the junction of Stepps Road and Springboig Road on Sunday morning, around 1.30am.

Police Scotland has now confirmed that the chase began in Springhill Trading Estate, continued along Edinburgh Road and ended when the car collided with the taxi close to Stepps Road and Springboig Road. 

The incident has been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner for consideration.

A 20-year-old man was reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with alleged road traffic offences and later released. He is expected to appear in court at a later date.
