COUNCIL inspection teams are to visit Rangers' Ibrox stadium to assess damage to the stadium roof which led to delays in a recent game.

Rangers' league match with Dumbarton was held up for 10 minutes amid safety concerns, with around 740 Rangers fans moved to the family stand due to 'fabric' issues.

Glasgow City Council said it was awaiting a formal report on the damage by Rangers FC, which would be followed up with an inspection and recommendation to the club.

The problem is understood to caused by loose flashing, which seals a roof from water penetration.

The council said it would expect an remedial action to be taken by Rangers by the time of the next home game on December 12.

A city council spokesman said: "The responsibility for safety within a sports ground lies with the club that holds the safety certificate.

"Therefore the decision on any necessary actions required during a matchday rest with the club, who can also liaise as required with representatives from Police Scotland in attendance.

"The council has been in dialogue with the club as to the nature of the incident that occurred and is awaiting a formal report from them."

Following Tuesday's incident a Rangers spokesman said: "Some fans in the Sandy Jardine Stand, section GF4, were relocated to the Broomloan Stand as a precautionary measure when safety staff at the stadium identified a loose piece of roofing fabric."

The fans, in the lower tier of the Sandy Jardine Stand, were moved on to the tarmac that lies between the stand and the pitch.

Then they were ushered to the Broomloan section, behind one of the goals. Some cladding could be seen dangling from the roof of the Govan Stand.
