More than £5m could be spent removing a dangerous roundabout where a pedestrian was killed.

The Evening Times understands that the Peat Road roundabout in Pollok, near Silverburn Shopping Centre, could be demolished and a traffic light system installed to combat long-running problems.

The estimated cost is £5 million but it is thought that the final total could be more.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) have been asked to provide £1.2m towards the project with Glasgow City Council also contributing to the total.

The large roundabout is three lanes wide and connects five roads – Barrhead Road east and west, Peat Road, Brockburn Road and Braidcraft Road.

Under the improvement works the roundabout could be removed, Brockburn Road “stopped up” and blocked for car use, and a four-way traffic light controlled junction built.

Members of Pollok Community Council have been campaigning for years for improvements to Barrhead Road and the connecting roundabout.

They say the current infrastructure cannot cope with the volume of vehicles using it and that the problem has been getting worse for years as the area becomes more built up.

A 68-year-old woman died and another woman was injured after they were hit by a car on the pedestrian crossing in January 2014.

Residents have called for a review of the road and the close proximity of a the crossing to the busy roundabout.

The Evening Times revealed in June that consultants had been tasked by Glasgow City Council with finding a permanent fix for the road.

The plans were presented to local people as part of an informal group called the Silverburn Forum.

They included the option of building a £15m flyover that would stretch from east to west in the direction of Barrhead Road – but this was discounted by the council.

In June the city council said that two options had been selected for “further evaluation”.

The council today declined to comment on the details of the chosen option. But a senior council source told the Evening Times: “The preferred option is the demolition and clearance of the roundabout and the construction of a new light-controlled junction.

“SPT have been asked to contribute £1.2m towards the cost of the project and the council will also contribute.

“This is a long-awaited solution to a dangerous road which I am sure will be good news for those who use it.

"People across Glasgow know about this roundabout and not for the right reasons. There is a need for a solution.”

The source added: “There is the potential to create not just something safer but also a gateway for Silverburn and the Pollok area.”

A city council spokeswoman said: “We have submitted a £1.2m funding bid to SPT for improvements to the roundabout.

“Once the outcome of the bid is known we will be in a position to finalise the design. Ultimately, however, these improvements aim to reduce congestion and improve safety for all road users.”
