PET owners have been warned to be extra vigilant after two yobs tried to snatch a dog while he was being walked.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was targeted by the crooks in Cumbernauld on Sunday morning.
The pooch was being walked by his female owner in Lochend Road at around 10am when a two men in a black car approached them.
Police said one man tried to grab the dog and pull it into the vehicle.
However, two joggers intervened and the suspects made off empty handed.
A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed officers were investigating the attempted theft of a dog.
He said: "A 47-year-old female was approached by two males within a black coloured Ford car.
"One male attempted to get the dog into the vehicle.
"The female was assisted by two joggers and the males made off.
"We would like to speak with the joggers and any other witnesses."
Police confirmed both the dog and owner were "safe and well".
