The former Yorkhill Hospital will begin a new chapter in its history this week.

The Minor Injuries Unit and outpatient department for West Glasgow is moving from the Western Infirmary to the former children’s hospital site.

It will now be the West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital and opens to its first patients at 9am on Friday.

The move will also mark the complete closure of the Western Infirmary, which will be redeveloped by Glasgow University.

Robert Calderwood, NHSGGC Chief Executive, said: “Earlier this year, the majority of services, including all inpatient wards and the A&E department, closed at the Western Infirmary and transferred to the new Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Govan.

“Now, all remaining services at the Western Infirmary will transfer to a new home across the road on the Yorkhill site at the new West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital.

“Ultimately it is our aspiration to see these services located on the Gartnavel Campus and therefore this move to the Yorkhill site is a stepping stone before this move takes place.

“We need to vacate the Western Infirmary site as this has already been purchased by the University of Glasgow and they are keen to move forward with their own redevelopment plans.”

The Minor Injuries Unit opens on Friday morning while other services will begin on Monday, December 7.

These will include the West Maternity Care Centre, a range of outpatient services, Physiotherapy and Therapy Centre, Respiratory and X-ray and Imaging.

With the exception of the Minor Injuries Unit, which can treat children aged five years and above for a range of minor injuries, the West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital will only treat adults.

Yorkhill Hospital is now open at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital site.

Ann Allen, director of Glasgow University’s Estates and Buildings Service, said: “We’re pleased to be working with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to ensure a smooth handover as we prepare for our redevelopment of the Western Infirmary site.

"The University is aiming to develop a campus capable of delivering a truly world-leading research, teaching and learning environment for our students and staff, as well as providing facilities that people in the west end of Glasgow can use and enjoy.

"A formal consultation on our more detailed masterplan for the development will begin early next year.”
