'I think about you every day' Mary Berry tells Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain

Stay-at-home mum Nadiya triumphed in the BBC contest in October, with judges Paul Hollywood and Mary expressing their pride in the win.

She told the Radio Times: “I saw Mary recently, and she said to me, ‘Just because I don’t text and do all this fancy technology stuff, it doesn’t mean I don’t think about you every single day’.

“I never imagined someone like her would say that to me.”

After crowning Nadiya winner, Mary had said: “I am really proud of Nadiya, not so confident to start with, but over the weeks she has grown in confidence.

“She came into the tent for the final, and was nervous – but she had the look that said she can do it.”

Nadiya has since become a columnist for The Times Magazine, and signed a publishing deal with Penguin Random House, with a book in the works and expected to hit shelves in June.

She also revealed that her three children, Musa, aged nine, Dawud, eight, and five-year-old daughter, Maryam, had picked up her refined flavour combinations.

“They know their flavours, which is nice, because it means they’ve been listening. My older son asked for a burnt sugar coconut praline cake for his birthday last year,” she said.

And despite the pressures of the Bake Off, Nadiya still enjoys making cakes for other people.

She said: “As therapeutic as it is for me, the reaction that you get from people when you bake them a cake – that’s the most important thing.”
