SHIPBUILDING firm BAE systems is to recruit more than 40 advanced apprentices in Glasgow this year.

The 43 Scottish recruits, who will be based at the firm's naval shipbuilding base will contribute to the record 142 advanced trainees being taken on by the firm in 2016.

Candidates have until the end of February to apply for one of 35 advances apprenticeships, or eight higher apprenticeships based in Govan.

The scheme offers young people a combination of vocational experience and training up to degree and masters level, while working full time towards a recognised qualification.

Nigel Whitehead, Group Managing Director, Programmes and Support at BAE Systems said: "BAE Systems is a company with great ambitions and nurturing a high calibre workforce is vital to our future. We take great pride in the record number of higher level apprenticeships on offer this year and the exciting introduction of master level degrees for our existing employees.

"BAE Systems remains committed to developing the skills needed in our sector and our apprentices enjoy not only high quality training but real hands-on experience developing, building and supporting the cutting-edge products that will safeguard our national security in years to come."

A total of 680 apprentices are set to be hired by the firm this year across the country, training for between three and five years on defence and aerospace projects.
