A LUXURY holiday resort is being investigated by lawyers after a Glasgow man became seriously ill while on his dream holiday.

Alan Wallace, from Bishopbriggs, was on a two-week holiday to Egypt with his family when he became seriously ill while in Sharm El Sheikh.

Alan, 49, was at the Holiday Village Red Sea resort with his wife Catherine, 46, and daughter Rachael, 6 when he became unwell.

The painter and decorator had diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pains and fever during the first week of the trip and doctors were urgently called in.

Specialist travel lawyers from Irwin Mitchell, who are presenting the family, have now launched an investigation into the holiday resort after Alan's illness.

They are investigating claims that the hotel food was unappetising, the cold food was not adequately chilled and there were flies in the restaurant.

He told the firm that the hotel food was unappetising and that the cold food served was not adequately chilled.

Alan said: "We’d been looking forward to our summer holiday all year and just two days in, it was ruined.

"Not only was I seriously unwell, but my wife and young daughter had to go through the stress and anxiety of seeing me so ill that I had to be put on a drip.

"It ruined their holiday as well.

"It is shocking to find out that despite people making complaints about this hotel before our stay there holidaymakers are still falling ill whilst staying at the resort and lessons are clearly not being learned."

Although Alan began to improve, he lost a stone and a half in weight and was still feeling ill when he came back home.

Jennifer Mullins, a specialist international personal injury lawyer representing the Wallace family, said: “It is important to investigate the conditions at the resort to determine if any lessons can be learnt to reduce the risk of more guests falling ill again at the resort.”

“Given the history this resort has in terms of holidaymakers falling ill during their stays, we were very concerned to hear about the gastric illness which Alan contracted during his holiday at the Holiday Village Red Sea resort.

“The fact that he suffered such a weight loss and continued to suffer symptoms even after he returned to the UK shows the impact that serious gastric illness can have on a person’s health.

"Following our instruction, we are now commencing our own investigations into the problems that our clients faced and, as part of that, we would be keen to hear from anyone who may have further information about standards and hygiene levels at the resort, who may be able to assist with our investigations."

The law firm has secured settlements from other people who have contracted Cryptosporidium, Salmonella and Shigella infections after staying at the same resort.

Alan booked the trip through TUI UK Limited trading as First Choice Holidays and Flights Limited.

A spokesman from First Choice holidays, the firm said: "We are sorry to hear of Mr Wallace’s experience at the Holiday Village Red Sea resort in Sharm El Sheikh last year.

"As this is now subject to legal proceedings, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.

"Thomson and First Choice closely audit all resorts to which we operate to ensure that health, hygiene and comfort levels are maintained in line with industry standards."
