One of Glasgow's best-known pubs is to shut up shop for good after over a century in the city.

MacSorley's Music Bar on Jamaica Street announced their imminent closure via Facebook.

The pub, restaurant and live music venue has been a Glasgow favourite for the last 113 years.

A post, which appears to have now been deleted but circulated social media and other media sources, said that MacSorley’s will close its doors for the last time on Sunday, February 14.

The post said: “We are sad to announce the closing of the doors, fittingly on Sunday 14th February. In the spirit of THE LAST WALTZ the weekend will feature all the usual suspects as well as some very special guests. Please join us and show some love as we say goodbye.”

Glasgow Times:

Concerned punter David Morrison asked the owners about the closure on Facebook. He said: "Just heard that MacSorleys will no longer be a music bar as of 14th February??? Surely this is not?? This place is a Glasgow institution!! Tell me it's not true."

The pub responded: "The current owner and staff are leaving MacSorleys after the 14th of February. What happens in the future is in the hands of the Landlord of the building."

David continued, "I see. it'd be nice to think that the new owners will allow the "tradition" to continue and that all the loyal, regular customer base can continue to enjoy the music, food and atmosphere... Fingers crossed."

Glasgow Times:

The news comes after the closure of the nearby Arches nightclub. MacSorleys was a favourite with ravers attending dance events at the now defunct nightclub which closed last year.

Glasgow Licensing Board made the decision to curtail the licensed hours of the leading multi-arts venue, effectively preventing the organisation from continuing its very successful and popular programme of club nights.

At the time, Police Scotland said there were "potentially lethal and profound consequences" unless instances of drug misuse and disorder were addressed - and the board agreed effectively closing the nightclub and forcing the arts venue into administration.

The Evening Times also announced last year that the Crystal Palace pub is planning to get a £10m upgrade as part of a hotel plan.

Pub Chain JD Wetherspoon, who own the venue which sits across from MacSorley's, are behind the proposals.

Scottish artist KT Tunstall is among the big names who have played live at MacSorley’s over the years.
