THE final shortlist for the Glasgow Sports Person of the Year awards has been announced ahead of the ceremony next month.

The awards, which will be held in the City Chambers, celebrate those who promote sports across the city and inspire future generations of athletes.

The 2015 awards mark one of the most memorable years in the city's sporting history, with Glasgow hosting two David Cup ties, the IPC Swimming World Championships and the European Judo Open.

A total of 12 awards will be handed out on the evening in categories including Coach of the Year, Services to Sport Lifetime Achievement Award, Club of the Year and Young Sports Person of the Year.

The shortlists for nine of these categories have been announced with the winners of the Sports Person of the Year, Services to Sport Lifetime Achievement Award and the Lord Provost’s Special Award being announced on the evening.

Previous winners of the coveted Sports Person of the Year Award include Sir Chris Hoy, Andy Murray OBE and Ross Murdoch.

Deputy leader of Glasgow City Council and chairman of Glasgow Life, Archie Graham, said: "Building on the success of the best ever Commonwealth Games, last year was another remarkable year in our proud sporting journey with some of the biggest names in sport competing in our city.

"The city shone on the global stage with the Davis Cup and World Gymnastics Championships watched by sell-out crowds and by global television audiences. It truly was a year to remember in so many ways.

"The annual Sports Person of the Year Awards will give us the chance to officially celebrate the success of Glasgow's Year of Sport and also the sportsmen and women who were at its heart.

"At the same it will rightly recognise those who make such a difference to sport at a grassroots level including volunteers, coaches and schools who do so much to develop sport in communities across our city."

Competition in all categories is high with Glasgow City FC (Football), Glasgow Cycle Team (Cycling) and Glasgow Warriors (Rugby Union) all in the running to be crowned Team of the Year.

Glasgow-based Joanne Butterfield (Athletics) and US Open champion Gordon Reid (Tennis) have been shortlisted for the Evening Times Disabled Athlete of the Year while Glasgow Fever Basketball and Sapphire Gymnastics will go head to head to be crowned Club of the Year.

Head of Sport for the Evening Times, and sister papers The Herald and Sunday Herald, Graham Shields said: "The Evening Times is proud to be associated with this fantastic event, which promises to be great night celebrating best of the city’s sporting endeavour and achievement.

"This year’s nominees were as impressive as ever, with very competitive categories, presenting the judging panel with some very difficult choices in selecting winners from the huge amount of hard work done in city schools and clubs and by hugely impressive individuals."
