A DAD is fighting for his life after a private hire taxi struck him and his young son in a hit and run following a family wedding reception.

The 31-year-old, named locally as Ryan McLean, and his six-year-old son, Logan, were hit outside Glencairn Social Club in Glasgow Road, Rutherglen.

Glasgow Times:

The pair were struck by the Volkswagen Golf private hire car at around 12.15am yesterday.

The 60-year-old male driver of the taxi failed to stop at the time of the incident. Police said he was traced a short time after.

Emergency services attended and the victims were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Staff have described Mr McLean's injuries as life threatening. His son is said to be in a stable condition.

Last night Mr McLean's family were at his bedside as inquiries continued into the incident.

Police have appealed for information from anyone who saw what happened.

The Evening Times understands Mr McLean and his wife Stephanie, who are from the Castlemilk area, had been at the wedding reception of a family member on Saturday night at the social club.

Mr McLean and his son were hit as they left the function.

Staff at the venue yesterday told of their shock.

The club has been keeping in touch with the family to check on Mr McLean and his son's condition.

A member of the team said: "The club is constantly in touch with the family to see how they are.

"We all really hope they recover soon.

"I didn't see it happen but everyone came out after to do whatever we could.

"It was a shock but it was quite calm because we knew it was serious.

"We're helping out with inquiries and we'll do whatever we can to help.

"Everyone is thinking of them and the family."

Family members have urged people with information to come forward.

Bride Sharon Pattison said on Facebook: "Anyone with any information please help, this is my cousin's wee boy and husband."

Well-wishers and friends of the family rallied round to give their support.

Posting on Facebook, one said: "I am so sorry to hear this. It's horrendous. Sending big hugs."

Another well-wisher said: "Prayers for both and all family, what a terrible thing to have happened."

Sergeant Craig McDonald from the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Motherwell said: “Enquiries are at an early stage to establish the exact circumstances of this incident and we want to speak to anyone who may have witnessed what happened.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101.”

It is the second hit and run to take place in Rutherglen in a week.

Police launched a manhunt after two teenagers, aged 14 and 15, were struck by a light green Vauxhall Corsa in Fernhill Road.

It happened in Fernhill Road at about 2.15pm on Saturday 23 January.

The 14-year-old was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he was said to be in a stable condition.

The 15-year-old boy was not injured.

Police asked anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
