More than £2,800 has been raised in memory of a "bus stop cat" which captured the hearts of passengers before it was found with "horrific injuries".

The ginger cat, called Missy, was found by its owner Richard McCormick with severe injuries which may have been caused by an attack or a road accident.

The 13-year-old feline was taken to a vet and had to be put down after it was found to have suffered a fractured skull, broken jaw and its teeth were knocked out.

The plight of the cat has prompted those who had loved to see it at the number 39 bus stop in Dunsbury Way, Havant, Hampshire, to donate towards a plaque through a justgiving.com fundraising page.

Glasgow Times:

And flowers, photos, children's drawings and messages have also been left at the bus stop in memory of Missy.

The appeal has so far collected more than £2,800, with organiser Craig Cockram planning to give the remaining money after paying for a plaque to an animal charity.

He wrote on the fundraising page: "We would like to raise as much money as possible for a plaque and the remaining monies going to charity for the 39 bus stop cat.

"This poor cat which was loved by many who just sat on a seat on the 39 stop in Dunsbury Way Leigh Park. Loved to be stroked and have the attention it was the most trusting cat. For a few years it would just come along and sit and wait."

Peter Griffin posted on the page: "Breaks my heart to know that someone or thing could do that to this beautiful cat. RIP little missy and thank you for all the joy you brought to people over the years."
