A campaign has been launched to encourage families to visit their local libraries.

The initiative is being run as part of the Scottish Government's Read, Write, Count programme which aims to improve key numeracy and literacy skills among young primary school children across Scotland.

The Love Your Library campaign hopes to highlight the range of free services available ahead of National Libraries Day on February 6.

Cherry Campbell, star of children's show Katie Morag, singer and presenter Michelle McManus and family entertainment group Funbox helped to launch it at Gorbals Library in Glasgow.

They will all be reading from their favourite books with families in a series of readings in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee next Saturday.

The Scottish Government has already allocated £198,000 of funding to support partnership work in libraries.

Education Secretary Angela Constance, who was also at the launch, said: "I want to support parents and make it easier for them to be involved in their child's learning outside of school.

"Libraries don't just provide reading material, they offer a welcoming environment for families to enjoy time together and help develop children's literacy and numeracy skills."
