David Bowie's son Duncan Jones has announced he is to be a father for the first time.

The 44-year-old posted the news on his official Twitter page and also made a reference to the anniversary of his father's death from cancer.

A hand-drawn cartoon of a baby with an umbilical cord protruding from its stomach and a speech bubble with the words 'I'm waiting' accompanied the message.

"One month since dad died today. Made this card for him at Christmas. Due in June. Circle of life. Love you, granddad,' he wrote.

The Bafta award-winning director of Moon is the late rock star's eldest child. He is married to photographer Rodene Ronquillo.

In 2013, Jones' wife was given the all-clear following her own cancer battle which saw her undergo a double mastectomy.

"My fiance, at the time, ended up finding my lump, it was right underneath my breast, above my rib," she said in an interview with Popsugar.

She added the "very awkward place" was probably why it had been missed previously.

The couple were married in 2012.

Jones is the only child from the 10-year marriage of Bowie and first wife Angie, who was recently a contestant in Celebrity Big Brother.

He has been estranged from his mother for nearly 30 years.

On January 10, he confirmed his 69-year-old father had lost his 18-month fight with liver cancer on Twitter.

"Very sorry and sad to say it's true," his tweet read. "I'll be offline for a while. Love to all."

The post was accompanied by a photograph of the Life On Mars singer with his baby son.

Jones, the director of the upcoming film adaptation of Warcraft, was also at the helm of sci-fi thriller Source Code.

The couple's first child would have been Bowie's first grandchild.

Meanwhile, Bowie's widow Iman broke her silence on social media for the first time since her husband's death.

The 60-year-old former supermodel posted a simple message on her official Twitter page that read: "Love & gratitude" on Saturday.

The couple were married in 1992, two years after they met.
