Two men have been arrested in Glasgow over a £2.3 million drug seizure at a port in the North East of England.

A consignment that included 24kg (53lbs) of cocaine, 16kg (35lbs) of heroin, 144kg (317lbs) of cannabis resin and 12kg (26lbs) of herbal cannabis was discovered by Border Force officers carrying out checks at Teesport, near Redcar, on January 29.

Officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) working on the case raided a property in Yoker, Glasgow, on Wednesday and arrested two men aged 32 and 38.

They were later charged with importation offences and a report has been sent to the procurator fiscal.

Officers said the drugs had a potential street value of £2.3 million.

Bill Robertson, from the NCA's border investigation team, based at the Scottish Crime Campus, said: "It is fairly unusual for a single seizure to include such a wide range of substances and in these sort of quantities.

"Those drugs will now not reach the streets of Scotland, and the damage they would have caused has been prevented.

"Our investigation continues, and we continue to work with Border Force and Police Scotland to break the link between larger scale traffickers and street-level dealing."

Christina Brown, assistant director of Border Force North East, said: "By making this seizure we have stopped a significant quantity of dangerous drugs reaching the streets of the UK.

"Detections like this demonstrate how Border Force officers are at the forefront of the fight to keep illegal substances out of the country."
