A RIDING school for children with disabilities is beating the winter chill thanks to a new biomass heater.

The Glasgow Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) is now the only centre in Scotland to have an indoor heated arena.

The school provides lessons and equine therapy to more than 400 disabled children and adults in the Greater Glasgow area.

John Paton, chairman of Glasgow RDA, said: “Having an unheated arena was absolutely fine in favourable conditions, but when the cold and damp days arrived it was much more difficult for our riders to be comfortable and we wanted to change that.

“The new heating system has greatly improved the experience for our riders, who can now come along and enjoy their sessions regardless of the weather and that’s a real bonus.”

Emma Smith, whose six-year-old daughter Marissa rides at Glasgow RDA said: “Marissa was born 11 weeks early and has chronic lung disease and I never imagined that she would be able to ride a horse, but Glasgow RDA and its volunteers have made it possible.”
