Love was in the air, or rather the water, as one man made Valentine's Day incredibly special by popping the question in front of an audience of finned friends.

Louis Harrison, 23, devised the plan to propose to his girlfriend, Bethany James, 20, during a visit to the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.

The aquarium's host team worked with Mr Harrison to help create a unique experience the couple would never forget.

The spectacular proposal involved the aquarium's divers taking the plunge in the second largest tank - the Eddystone Reef - and holding up a "Will you marry me?" sign when the couple entered the exhibit.

Miss James was left speechless when her boyfriend got down on bended knee to ask for her hand in marriage.

She accepted his proposal and the couple celebrated with a champagne toast alongside the Eddystone Reef's residents, including Smooth-hound Sharks, Bull Huss Sharks, shoaling mackerel, groups of bass and pollock, colourful cuckoo wrasse and many fascinating native species to British waters.

Glasgow Times:

Mr Harrison, from Plymouth, said: "Beth is a big lover of animals and when I was looking for ideas to inspire the proposal, this seemed perfect.

"We have been talking about coming to the aquarium for ages so she didn't expect a thing.

"Luckily she said yes. I wanted to propose in a way that was completely different and would make for a brilliant memory.

"With the help of the National Marine Aquarium team, I think I definitely achieved that."

Victoria Spurdle, from the National Marine Aquarium, said: "We were only too happy to lend a helping hand in making sure all the arrangements came together on the day and made it an unforgettable experience for them both.

"We wish Louis and Beth the very best for their future together."
