ROCK band Texas and actor James McAvoy will tonight be honoured by Glasgow Lord Provost Sadie Docherty at an awards ceremony in the City Chambers.

The band, lead by Glasgow-born singer Sharleen Spiteri, will be recognised for their music as part of this year's Lord Provost's Awards.

They have performed together for 25 years and have amassed 35 million record sales including number one albums.

James McAvoy, who was brought up in Drumchapel and starred in a string of hit movies, will receive the performing arts award.

He is also noted for having given his personal, financial backing to a scholarship scheme for disadvantaged young actors at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Glasgow Warriors will receive the sports sward for their triumph in the Pro-12 international rugby tournament.

Mrs Docherty will present the awards at a civic dinner which seeks to recognise the efforts of Glasgow people from all walks of life who have made an outstanding contribution to the city and their fellow citizens.

She said: "The Lord Provost's Award is a chance for the city to say thank you to the people who make Glasgow.

"In every corner of the city there are people who are motivated to go that extra mile just to add something special to the life of those around them.

"Glasgow is fortunate to have such a deep well of talent and energy to draw upon and that is reflected in the fact people from such a wide range of interests and experiences will be honoured at the awards ceremony.

"The awards for Texas and James McAvoy will undoubtedly grab the attention as they are icons in the fields of music and drama but everyone who steps forward to receive an award has their own star quality who has lifted the spirits and aspirations of Glasgow citizens in their own way.

"I am very proud to have the opportunity to thank these wonderful award winners in person for their part in making Glasgow the great city that it is."

The other award winners are business - Taylor and Anne Ferguson, charity award - Dr Mozammel Huq, education award - Sunnyside Primary School, health award - Professor Frank Dunn, public service award - Ms Evelyn Scott, public service award - Mrs Christine Devine, voluntary services award - Frank McArdle.
