Rioting in Manchester when Rangers played Zenit Saint Petersburg in the UEFA Cup final was the last battle to take place on mainland British soil according to a new map.

The Dutch data project Nodegoat is attempting to map all battles in history using Wikipedia, and the 2008 incident has been recorded as the last battle on mainland British soil.

The BBC reports that the newly released map of all recorded-conflicts in history relies on information available and editable by the public on Wikipedia.

The map uses an algorithm to piece together the details, taking the information from DBPedia which collates information from Wikipedia and the Wikidata database.

But this algorithm picked up on this incident which was reported in the press as the "Battle of Piccadilly", a headline mentioned in the footnotes of the Wikipedia article on it.

Violent clashes between police and Rangers fans took place in Manchester after a technical fault on a huge screen in the city's Piccadilly Gardens failed minutes before the UEFA Cup Final which the Glasgow club lost 2-0.
