POLICE have revealed a second woman was mugged in Dennistoun less than a week before a terrifying knife attack.

Yesterday the Evening Times told how Sarah-May Philo was held at knife point and robbed of her handbag and a takeaway meal.

A cowardly thug had tailed her in a car with his lights off before pouncing as she walked alone along a dark street.

Now it emerges a similar attack took place on Friday, February 26 on nearby Onslow Drive.

At around 8pm a 26-year-old woman was approached, threatened and her handbag stolen in the same manner as Sarah-May.

In both incidents the suspect is described as white, mid-20s with a local accent, dark hair and wearing a grey hooded top.

In the Onslow Drive attack he was also wearing a waterproof jacket.

Sarah-May, who was mugged on Westercraigs on March 1 at around 6.30pm, said: “I keep thinking about the other girl.

“She sounds just like me - walking alone, carrying bags, something in her ears, not expecting anything like this to happen.

"For me, it was a Tuesday at 6.30pm. You just don’t think it’s going to happen at that sort of time. “People are still coming home from work at that time."

The 32-year-old had popped out to pick up a takeaway on the evening she was mugged.

A man drove alongside her with his vehicle lights off before jumping from the car and holding a knife to her back.

Not only did he take her handbag, which only contained £35 in cash, he also demanded her food.

Although Sarah-May says she is too scared to walk alone at night now, she is determined not to be labelled a victim following the attack.

The teacher has now set up a petition calling for Glasgow City Council to install additional street lighting in Dennistoun.

She said: "It's going well. A lot of people are signing. What is most important is the comments below the petition.

"The feedback has been not only astonishment, but also fury at the fact that many complaints have been made about bad or non existent street lighting and so far the council have taken a very long time to move on the requests.

"We need public backing and we need immediate action and there seems to be a lacking in the latter.

"This being said many people are willing to get behind this."

So far the petition has attracted dozens of comments backing Sarah-May's call.

Among those are Leona Cook, who writes: "Being a resident in this area, I too believe the area would benefit from updated street lights and increased security measures.

"I also have had my car, along with others in my street (not far from Westercraigs) vandalised and nothing was done due to the lack of CCTV."

Lisa Mennie writes: "Well done Sarah-May and so sorry for your awful ordeal. You are really brave. It's a big issue in Scotstoun too.

"There is literally no street lighting in the streets round about Scotstoun stadium, to the point where I have felt really frightened walking even at tea time in the winter."

Martin Robertson adds: "Street lighting in Dennistoun residential streets is sub-standard. The old sodium lamps do not provide enough light."
