Trainspotting 2 is set to be filmed in Glasgow, author Irvine Welsh has confirmed.

The much-anticipated sequel, starring Ewan McGregor, will start shooting in May.

The 1996 hit movie featured a host of Glasgow locations including the disused Wills cigarette factory on Alexandra Parade and Cafe Jaconelli on Maryhill Road.

Now it seems the new film, directed by Danny Boyle, will once again use Glasgow as a backdrop.

Speaking to Glasgowist author Irvine Welsh said: "TS2 will be filmed all over the central belt, basically anywhere we can find location wise.

"Interiors [will be filmed] in Bathgate where our sound stage is, a lot of exteriors in Glasgow (as most crew live in Glasgow area) and also Edinburgh to give it the sense of place.

"We’ll probably do quite a bit more [in Edinburgh] than we did in the first movie as we have more money and aren’t operating with the same financial constraints, but it’s still a pain transporting crew around and putting them up in hotels – they work better if they can work from home.

"So have no fear, Glasgow will be well represented."

Trainspotting 2 will be loosely based on Welsh's 2002 novel Porno and will once again feature characters played by Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner and Robert Carlyle.
