A sheep has been mauled to death by two dogs at a farm in Kilbarchan. 

Two others were left seriously injured at Crossflat farm according to the Gazette. 

According to witnesses, unattended dogs were seen running into a field, chasing and attacking the sheep.

It's understood that one of the cheviot breed died as a result of the attack.

The dogs escaped their owner on Tuesday afternoon. One of the dogs was caught and the address of its owner was found on its collar.

The animal's death comes soon after Police Scotland launched a campaign with the National Farmers Union Scotland to tackle an increasing problem of sheep worrying in Renfrewshire.

As well as educating owners of the consequences, the message stresses the importance of keeping dogs on a tight leash when they are in the countryside.

Owners whose dogs are out of control can face fines of up to £1000 and the possibility of the animal being destroyed.

One recent harrowing example resulted in two calves and their mothers being killed in Wateryetts, Lochwinnoch.

In relation to the latest incident, police are following a positive line of enquiry and the owner is expected to be charged under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953.

Chief Inspector Simon Wright stated: "I received a report of two dogs worrying sheep at a farm in Kilbarchan.

"The tragic consequences of this action by the dogs has resulted in one death and two further sheep being severely injured.

"While my officers are following a positive line of enquiry in relation to this incident, I would remind dog owners that they are ultimately responsible for the criminal actions of their dogs and I would seek their cooperation in ensuring they retain control of their animals while enjoying the countryside of Renfrewshire."
