FAMILY and friends laid Paul Daniels to rest in an coffin topped with a picture of his wife Debbie McGee with a handwritten note and a silver wand.

The ivory-white coffin, marked with two joker playing cards, was carried into the chapel at Chilterns Crematorium in Buckinghamshire.

Dozens of the magician's relatives gathered outside as a hearse pulled up.

A bed of red roses was also placed on the casket, in addition to a tribute message, reading: "Love you always, Debbie xxx."

Among the crowds were Mr Daniels' nephews and his three sons Paul, Gary and Martin. Other familiar faces included comedian Barry Cryer, television presenter Gloria Hunniford and actress Bonnie Langford.

The magician died aged 77 at his Berkshire home, a month after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour.

He was treated by doctors at the Royal Berkshire Hospital but decided to return home to spend his final days with loved ones.

Around 200 people are thought to have attended the service, which lasted 30 minutes.

Daniels was born Newton Edward Daniels in Middlesbrough and developed his magic skills in working men's clubs, making his TV debut on talent series Opportunity Knocks.

He then took over the primetime Saturday night slot with his BBC show, which started in 1979.

Daniels was known for a string of catchphrases, including the line: "You'll like this... not a lot, but you'll like it."
