ALLY MCCOIST is delighted to see Rangers back in the Premiership – but insists Mark Warburton’s side will have to improve over the summer if they are to make a bid for the top flight title.

The Light Blues were crowned champions with a 1-0 win over Dumbarton on Tuesday night and have now turned their attentions to the Petrofac Training Cup final this weekend.

Warburton’s side will then get their first chance to face Celtic next Sunday as the Old Firm rivals do battle for a place in the Scottish Cup final.

But former Ibrox boss McCoist believes the Gers will have to add to their ranks before they can compete with Celtic over the course of a Premiership campaign.

Glasgow Times:

He told BBC Radio 5Live: “We are a country that can’t do without our big clubs in the top league and obviously Rangers and Celtic are by far and away the two biggest clubs.

“But for us not to have Hearts, Hibs, we need Aberdeen in there as well, we are a small nation that certainly needs all the big clubs playing against each other and competing in the league. It has definitely been to the detriment of Scottish football.

“At the moment, no, I don’t think Rangers can [challenge for the title straight away] but I am talking about immediately. We don’t know what is going to happen in the summer.

“It is going to be an important summer for all clubs, including Rangers and Celtic, to see what kind of talent they can bring in because that is a massively important factor.

Glasgow Times:

“Hearts have done exceptionally well this year, Aberdeen will look to strengthen. It will be interesting to see.

“Everyone is automatically saying that Rangers need players, and they do, there is absolutely no doubt about that. If Rangers have got any dreams of challenging Celtic, and indeed potentially winning the championship, they need to bring players in.

“But, having said that, Celtic, they are clever men that run football club, and they will know that they need to strengthen as well.”
