In a week of triumphalism for Rangers, the Ibrox side followed up their midweek Championship title party with an effortless victory at Hampden in the Petrofac Training Cup Final.

The Ibrox side warmed up for next weekend’s William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic with a comfortable 4-0 win over Peterhead in the Petrofac Cup Final at Hampden.

Glasgow Times:

An own-goal from Ally Gilchrist after just 17 minutes when he turned a Kenny Miller drive across goal into his own net set the tone for what was a largely one-sided affair at Hampden. Furhter strikes from James Tavernier, Andy Halliday and Kenny Miller ensured an easy week at the office for Mark Warburton's side.

By the time that Tavernier hit a rocket of a volley five minutes before the interval, the fear was that the Highlanders would be on the end of a cricket score. It didn't quite materialise that way, although the scoreline was a justified return from a game that the Ibrox side dominated.

Rangers had chances to add to the scoreline as the game went on but were frustrated at times as they tried to add to their tally.

It is to Peterhead's credit that while they chased shadows for much of the game they were prepared to stick to their task.

The Rangers defence did not look particularly at ease shortly after the restart when Rory McAlllister cut in from the left and slipped the ball through to Nicky Riley. The midfielder’s shot rippled the side-netting but John Kennedy, the Celtic first-team coach who was in attendance, would not have missed the frailty of the Ibrox defence.

Glasgow Times:

It was the jolt that Rangers needed to lift the pace and inject a bit of tempo into the game.

Gilchrist partially atoned for his earlier indiscretion when he hoofed an effort off the line, while Andy Halliday was denied when Graeme Smith got a hand to his effort before substitute Dean Shiels blasted an effort over the bar as Rangers sought to put the game firmly out of reach.

Inevitably, they added a third. Jason Holt was upended in the box and Andy Halliday converted the spot-kick to ease Rangers towards the trophy. Miller added a fourth as the game entered into its closing stages when he tapped the ball into the net at the far post.

Glasgow Times:

The much criticised Hampden pitch will be relaid tomorrow in preparation for Sunday’s cup tie, but it was a surface that Rangers were happy to dance a jig on last night as they collected their silverware.
