CCTV workers in Glasgow have called off a strike during the Old Firm clash after securing a pay deal.

The 19 Unison members have held 12 days of industrial action over the last six weekends - and planned to strike again this weekend including during Rangers and Celtic's Scottish Cup tie at Hampden on Sunday.

The workers were fighting employers Community Safety Glasgow, an arms-length organisation of Glasgow City Council, for equal pay for working 12-hour shifts, 365 days of the year.

They argued that staff elsewhere in the council are paid up to an extra £7,500 for working shifts and are calling for management to give the same deal to them.

Unison's Glasgow City Branch said in a statement today that the new pay structure will see salaries rise by 24%.

They added: "This new pay structure had been put on the backburner due to the budget situation in Glasgow City Council.

"This new pay structure, which will now be implemented later in the year, will see the workers pay rise by 24%."

In the meantime, the workers will receive an interim shift payment of £4,000 per year, backdated to January 1 2016.

Unison added: "This interim payment is less than the workers deserve after years of pay discrimination but the strike has moved the employer a fair distance from the first offer of £1,500.

"Securing a permanent pay rise of 24% shows how badly these workers have been treated in the past.

"The failure by Glasgow City Council to properly co-ordinate pay and grading across its ALEOs was a root cause of the years of pay discrimination endured by these workers."

Unison have thanked all those who supported the workers by attending their picket lines, protests and on social media.
