POLICE have made an arrest after a delivery man was injured in an alleged racist attack in a North Lanarkshire village.

The 39-year-old man was making a delivery to a shop on Edward Street in Bargeddie at around 7.20am yesterday when the incident is said to have taken place.

It is alleged the windscreen of his van was smashed with a bottle, and he was pushed to the ground and assaulted when he got out.

The incident was witnessed by horrified onlookers who were inside a take-away when it happened.

The victim, who is understood to be Polish, is not from the area but he makes regular drop offs to the row of shops on Edward Street.

One resident said: “The guy was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“There is a lot of in-fighting in this area between young guys and it is constantly kicking off.

“There are never any police to deal with it and this was bound to happen.”

An eyewitness said the victim had cuts around his face and a swollen eye.

The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that they attended the scene at around 8.30am.

They took the victim to Monklands Hospital to be treated for head injuries.

Officers arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of racially aggravated assault and vandalism.

Police say inquiries are ongoing to trace another suspect.
