A SCOTTISH private school has appointed the youngest headteacher in the UK's independent sector.

Ian Munro, 34, has taken up the post at Kelvinside Academy, in the west end of Glasgow.

Mr Munro grew up in Aberdeenshire and went to school in both the state and private sector before attending Edinburgh University.

He has previously worked as head of extra-curricular activities at George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh, head of biology at Gordonstoun and deputy head of Shiplake College, in Henley on Thames.

He said: "Kelvinside Academy is a special place and I have been immediately struck by its hugely positive spirit and strong sense of community.

"The school provides a broad and challenging education to pupils that stretches each child to be the best they can be. This philosophy is why I already feel at home here because for me, character is as important as grades."

Donald Wilson, chairman of the school's governors, said: “Ian demonstrated his understanding of Kelvinside’s vibrant and distinctive ethos. He values learning in the broadest sense but has an innovative and dynamic outlook."

Mr Munro succeeds Allan Gilliland who held the post for a year following the sudden death of Robert Karling in May 2015.

Kelvinside Academy was opened in 1878 by the Kelvinside Academy Company Ltd. Having formerly been grant-aided, the school became fully independent in 1985 and co-educational in 1998.
