LABOUR will build tens of thousands of homes to deal with a housing crisis Kezia Dugdale has said.

The Labour leader is campaigning on her party’s proposal she says will provide jobs as well as homes for those who need them most.

She said research shows 60,000 new homes would support 50,000 jobs. Labour’s plan would be for 45,000 to be for affordable social rent through councils or housing associations.

Ms Dugdale said she would also take on the rogue private landlords and protect tenants, while helping people who want to own their own home save for a deposit.

She said: “Everyone deserves a safe, warm and affordable home, and Labour has a plan to deliver that. It’s a plan based on investment, not cuts.

“Scotland has more than 150,000 people on social waiting lists, and an unacceptable amount of private tenants living in poverty.

“Meanwhile young people across Scotland are trapped in a cycle which is so hard to escape from. They can’t afford a deposit so they rent, but the rent is so high they can’t save up.”

The SNP meanwhile have entered the final week of campaigning with leaders heading all-round the country in a fleet of SNP branded people carriers in a bid to secure votes.

Nicola Sturgeon said her party had the only plan to invest in health, education and childcare.

She said: “The SNP in government has made real progress on so many issues, but we are determined to go even further, and over the next week we will be working harder than ever to drive home our positive message to people in Scotland.

The NSP leader laid out the investment the SNP would put in each area.

She added: “We will invest in 50,000 new houses, help small businesses and invest £750m in improving attainment in our schools.

Conservative leader Ruth Davidson turned her fire on Labour and the SNP mover Trident stating both would put the UKs defence and vital jobs at risk.

She said "Our message to people whose jobs are reliant upon Trident is clear: we are the only party which will stand up for you and defend your jobs and Britain's security."

"With Labour and the SNP joining forces on this, we will make a firm case to keep Britain's defences strong and to keep jobs at Faslane."
