MOTORING fanatics gathered in Glasgow to celebrate the anniversary of one of the UK’s most well-known cars.

Dozens of Ford Fiesta fans and collectors rallied outside the Riverside Museum yesterday to celebrate the car’s 40th anniversary.

Some had travelled almost 400 miles to attend the event this year, bringing along their own Fiestas in every colour and showing off their cars to intrigued passersby.

Organised by the fiesta-mk1.co.uk forum members, the show takes place every year and attracts people from across the country to Glasgow.

Mitesh Parmar, 33, from Burnley in Lancashire organised this year’s event and said: “We started in 2008 as a local meet up of Fiestas in the Glasgow area and grew from there.

“There are a lot of people from this area but we also have people from London, Lancashire, Derby...normally people travel up and make a weekend out of it as it’s the bank holiday.

“This is 40 years of Fiesta and we’ve had a really decent turnout.

“A lot of the lads here were brought up with these cars so it’s a bit of nostalgic thing. That’s the same with me, it carried on from there.”

Each year car owners are awarded titles for best car in show, and for the furthest travelled which was awarded jointly this year to two enthusiasts who had travelled around 375 miles from Swindon and Chippenham.

Iain Watson, 38, from the Glasgow’s South Side, had come to the show with his white 1981 Ford Fiesta.

Joining him were his two children Glen, 14 and Holly, 8.

Business owner Iain said he had spent almost a decade getting his car up to scratch and added that he is regularly stopped at petrol stations and in the street by people who want to take a look.

He said: “My car won last year and with this being the 40th anniversary I wanted it to be here in the lineup with everyone else.

“I had a Fiesta when I was 17, it was my first car, but I didn’t have the money at the time to upkeep it so it got wrecked.

“I thought if I ever had the chance for another one I would get it and restore it, so I did.

“I just love them, I love retro cars.

“My car is eight years in the making, and it costs time, effort and money, but it’s a car I’ll keep for the rest of my life.”

The first generation of Ford Fiestas were made between 1976 and 1983, introduced to the market as Ford Europe's first multi-national front-wheel-drive car.

At the time Ford had been trying to make the best small car in the world.

It made the best selling cars list in 1977 and has remained there since, with MK1 models frequently selling for more than £15,000 in car sales.
