A WOMAN bravely fought off an attacker after being sexually assaulted in a city centre street.

The 27-year-old was attacked in Ingram Street in the early hours of Saturday morning.

She was walking near to the Jelly Bear café, when she was approached and sexually assaulted by a male at around at around 3.20am.

The woman managed to break free and sought help from a group of men who were across the road and helped her get home.

The suspect fled up Ingram Street heading towards the centre of the city.

Police are studying CCTV images of the Merchant City and are trying to trace the men who came to the victim's aid.

The suspect is described as black, in his 20s, around 5ft 6 inches in height, stocky build and short black hair.

He was wearing a dark coloured jumper and jeans.

Detective Constable Vhairi MacDonald said: “We are looking at CCTV footage from in and around Merchant City and the City Centre in order to gain additional information.

"From our enquiries so far, we know that the young woman was assisted by a group of, perhaps five men and it’s important we speak to these men as I’m sure they have information which could assist our investigation.

"I am appealing directly to them to get in touch with us as a matter of urgency so that we can trace the man responsible for this crime.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at City Centre Police Office on 101.
