Tributes have poured in to a police officer who died after he collapsed while attending an emergency call-out. 

The 55-year-old took ill when he was called to an incident in North Lanarkshire's Newhouse on Monday night.

He has been named locally as Dougie Wiggins. 

Police say he collapsed while attending the call at the Travel Inn on Edinburgh Road at around 11.40pm.

He was taken to Wishaw General hospital by ambulance but died a shortly afterwards.

A Muirhouse community page on Facebook shared the news.

The post said the officer was well known and liked in the Motherwell community. 

The post also said that the officer was a great footballer when he was younger. It is understood the officer played for a number of Lanarkshire clubs including Cleland Miners, Bellshill YMCA and Shields United. 

Tributes poured in on social media following news of the officer's death.

Peter Tierney said: "RIP Dougie, he was a good man/ Heaven Must be full of good people, too many taken too soon. Thoughts and prayers with the family."

Robert Park said: "A sad loss to his family and friends, the community and his colleagues in Police Scotland. Thoughts go out to all."

David Waugh said: "Can't believe this sad news. Played football with Dougie great player and a great person. My thoughts and prayers go to his family."

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "At 11.40pm on Monday, May 2, whilst attending an emergency call at the Travel Inn on Edinburgh Road, a 55-year-old serving police officer took unwell and collapsed.

"He was taken to Wishaw General Hospital where he sadly died a short time later.

"There are no suspicious circumstances."
