A TEENAGE student from Glasgow is taking on the big parties in the election today.

Andrew McCullagh, 19, from Cranhill, is the only independent on the Glasgow regional list taking on the well-funded, and professionally organised national parties.

He is also up against grassroots movements with activists and networks across the city.

Ms McCullugh, a student at Kelvin College in Springburn, said he wanted to offer an independent voice who will campaign on issues that concern people in Glasgow.

He said: “I wanted to get my ideas out there. I want to see a defibrillator ion every school and nursery, more funding for mental health services for children and young people and for foreign visitors to pay healthcare insurance when in the UK.

“I’ve been campaigning round the doors and sent 43,000 leaflets out. Some people say they like my ideas.”

While he is unlikely to win enough votes to get elected he said the campaign has been worthwhile.

He added: “It is about getting the ideas out to people. It has been a good experience and I would definitely do it again.”

Mr McCullagh wants more funding for the NHs and schools. For the sex offenders register to be “transparent” and more police on the beat.

He said if he was elected he would donate from his MSP’s salary £100 every week to a local charity.
