WATER works on a popular East End road could cause delays for football fans and commuters – for three months.

Scottish Water say they are carrying out repairs on the A74 London Road.

A short section of the east-bound carriageway of London Road near Celtic Park has been reduced from two lanes to one and both lanes of the west-bound carriageway have been closed.

The road traffic management is required to enable contractors working for Scottish Water to carry out investigative work on a burst 24 inch water main and a damaged adjacent sewer.

They are also carrying out investigative work into ground conditions to enable a suitable reinstatement plan to be implemented.

The utility firm, however, says the burst main is not affecting water supplies in the area.

Diversion signs will direct west-bound traffic via Springfield Road, the A749 Dalmarnock Road and the A728 Clyde Gateway.

Scottish Water has liaised with Glasgow City Council’s roads department about the road traffic management.

Affected road users, including people attending football matches at Celtic Park, are advised to leave extra time for their journeys.

Celtic are due to play Aberdeen on Sunday and Motherwell on May 15 before the summer break.

A spokesman for Scottish Water said: “We thank them for their patience and understanding.”
