A FIRE broke out at Glasgow School of Art last night.

The blaze started in the kitchen of the college’s Reid Building on Renfrew Street at around 7.50pm.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent appliances from Cowacaddens and Maryhill after receiving a call that smoke was coming out of a kitchen.

It is understood students within the building were evacuated.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it was a small fire and it was exstinguished when they arrived by a sprinkler system.

Firefighters left the scene at around 9.50pm.

A spokeswoman for The Glasgow School of Art confirmed that there was a minor fire in the Refectory of the Reid Building last night.

The spokeswoman added: "The building fire alarm was activated and all occupants evacuated safely.

"The sprinkler system was automatically triggered and this put out the fire.”

Glasgow Times:

A fire previously tore through the college's 169-year-old Mackintosh Building back in May, 2014.

A report by the Scottish Fire and Rescue service found that the blaze started after flammable gases from a foam canister used in a student project were ignited.

The official fire service report also confirmed that a sprinkler system was not fully installed at the building and was not operational on the day of the blaze.

Glasgow Times:

The category-A listed building was engulfed in flames as students were preparing for their final-year degree show.

Much of their work and building’s famous library was lost in the fire.

Glasgow Times:

No one was injured in the fire but students, art lovers, architects and Glasgow officials spoke of their sorrow at the time of seeing the "iconic" building in flames.
