NICOLA Sturgeon will be elected back as First Minister tomorrow after a vote in the Scottish Parliament.

Her first job will be to announce her new Government team of Cabinet Secretaries and ministers.

She has already announced plans for a new cabinet post of Economy Secretary, splitting the responsibilities of the current Finance and economic Growth brief held by John Swinney.

Ms Sturgeon will likely promote another cabinet secretary to fill that role sparking a major government reshuffle.

With some junior ministers not returning to Parliament after the election there are posts to be filled and opportunities for long standing MSPs and for new faces to take a government post.

If Mr Swinney remains in one of the two finance and economy posts it could mean promotion for another who has performed well.

Possible contenders could be Infrastructure Secretary Keith Brown who has been a safe, competent cabinet secretary since his promotion from transport where he steadied the ship after Stewart Stevenson was forced to resign.

Transport minister, Derek Mackay, is another who could be promoted to a cabinet secretary role.

Angela Constance is expected to be moved from the education brief and the post will be one of the most important in Ms Sturgeon’s new government following her commitment to tackle the attainment gap between the most and least affluent pupils.

If Ms Sturgeon moves Ms Constance the post will certainly go to someone who can deliver on the boss’s promises.

Pollok MSP Humza Yousaf, is developing a growing reputation within the party, close to Ms Sturgeon, a confident, polished media performer and after spending most of his first term as external affairs minister could be in line for a promotion.

The cabinet will once again be gender balanced and new MSP Jeane Freeman could be catapulted straight into a government role with experience as a government advisor and enhanced reputation during the referendum campaign.

Former MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville was destined for government before she lost her seat in 2011 and could be another in line for a job on her return

Housing Minister, Margaret Burgess, didn’t seek re-election, like Local Government minister Marco Biagi and environment minister, Aileen McLeod lost her seat, leaving three junior posts to be filled.

Of the Glasgow MSPs Ms Sturgeon will obviously be First Minister, Mr Yousaf will almost certainly have a role, with others filling a number of other functions.

Holyrood ever present Sandra White has never had a government post and is unlikely to get one now, which is good news for her constituents where she has been a strong campaigner on local issues.

John Mason’s outspokenness and independent mind makes him likely to remain on the back benches where he is most comfortable.

James Dornan and Bill Kidd are both government whips and with a minority government that role will become even more important.

Bob Doris was an able deputy to Duncan McNeill on the Health committee last term and could take over a convenorship while new Provan MSP Ivan McKee will most likely be expected to find his feet.
