A COP has been praised for his advice after a thug violently kicked a woman in the stomach in Glasgow's West End.

The 35-year-old victim was assaulted on Woodlands Road at around 10.55pm on Sunday.

It is understood the woman fell on to her back during the assault which was unprovoked.

The woman suffered bruises but the positive attitude of a Police Scotland officer has been hailed by a friend of the victim in a post on Facebook.

A friend of the victim shared the advice the officer gave in the post which reads, "The police chap asked if I walk alone often at night and I rather wilfully and defiantly said, 'yes, I do'.

"His response was as follows, 'Good. Don't change your behaviour because of this.

"Don't let someone incapable of controlling themselves in public alter how you live your life, because this could have happened in broad daylight when you were with friends - if someone is bold enough to do it, then they're bold enough to do it at any time, anywhere to anyone'."

The friend of the woman who was attacked added: "A proper legend of a police man. Take heed of this advice. We must all walk our streets with confidence and safety. Please stay vigilant lovely folks!"

Facebook user Heather Armstrong said: "I'm glad she's OK, what a great response from the police officer."

Police Scotland confirmed they are investigating the incident.

A spokeswoman said: "Police are investigating an assault on a 35-year-old woman on Woodlands Road at around 10.55pm on Sunday, May 15.

"Enquiries are continuing and anyone with information can contact officers on 101."

The suspect who assaulted the woman wore a baseball cap and grey tracksuit.
