William Todd, who is also known as Willie,  was targeted close to Govan's Salvation Army Hall's at around 5.30pm.

It is understood that three men attacked the pensioner.

The pensioner, who has lived in the nearby sheltered housing complex for three years, remembers very little from the attack but his wife Louise says he was knocked over and money was taken.

He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment after care staff found out he had been attacked.

Louise, who has been married to William for over 60 years, said: "I am just getting over it. His face is a complete mess.

"He doesn't remember much but he said he felt something coming at him and that was it.

"No one has ever bothered me or my husband before this."

His wife said the suspects may have also had foreign accents.

The father-of-seven is regular at The Red Lion bar in Kinning Park's Paisley Road West who shared a shocking picture of the wounds of his attack on Facebook.

The grandfather - William also has seven grandchildren - has drank at the pub since it opened 27 years.

Eileen Wilson, who is the manageress, said: "He has been coming here for 27 years and he told me what happened on Sunday morning when we opened.

"I don't think it was football related. It was just an opportunist thief

"He is a great wee man and this could effect him a long time.

"I am disgusted by what happened, and someone somewhere must have seen something."

His wife Louise said the incident had been reported to the police and enquiries are ongoing.

A Police Spokeswoman said: "We have been made aware of the incident and enquiries are continuing."

A page has been set up to raise money for William following the attack, and so far over £500 has been raised for the pensioner.

Those behind the page said: "Willie is a gentleman who has a heart condition and who thankfully survived the shock and pain of a sever assault.

"As you can see from the disturbing photo, he was physically attacked and robbed of money in broad daylight in the town he has lived in all his life.

"I am asking the good people who read this to help with anything they can to enable Willie to go someway to restore his faith in the human race.

"I hope that this can go a small way to let him know that people do care and want to help him.

"In turn I hope this can help him to restore his confidence to be able to continue to go about his business without any fear."
