A city street was brought to a standstill on Monday morning after a dozy policeman crashed his patrol car into a set of traffic lights.

The car was on its way to an emergency when it crashed into the lights in the Great Northern Road area of Aberdeen around 5am.

Pictures of the damaged vehicle have since appeared on social media and have not attracted much in the way of sympathy.

Speaking on Facebook, Alison Kane said: "Good work lads, trust police to balls up traffic on a Monday morning."

Bradley Allan posted: "Bacon rolls are going to be late at the station this morning."

Ryan Reid commented: "Police brutality against the traffic lights."

Mark Carter said: "Hope the officer done a breathalyser."

The car had a huge dent at the front of the vehicle where it had struck the traffic lights. It was later uplifted and taken away.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "A one vehicle collision involving a marked police vehicle responding to a call happened at around 5am on Monday, 23 May, at Great Northern Road at its junction with Don Street.

No one was injured. The incident has been reported and enquiries into the circumstances will be carried out as is standard."
