JOEY BARTON is on the brink of becoming Mark Warburton’s most high-profile signing as Rangers boss as he closes in on a deal to take him to Ibrox.

The 33-year-old was offered a new contract by Burnley after helping the Clarets win the English Championship this season but it is in the Scottish top flight where he is now set to be playing his football next term.

Barton had a guided tour of Ibrox and Murray Park last weekend and, after spending recent days considering his options, he is now poised to join the Gers on a two-year deal.

The capture of the former Manchester City, Newcastle United and Queen’s Park Rangers star is a significant coup for boss Warburton as he bids to bolster his Light Blues ranks for a crack at the Premiership title at the first time of asking next season.

Barton was named in the Championship Team of the Year as he enjoyed a fine campaign for Sean Dyche’s side and he will link up with Head of Recruitment Frank McParland once again at Ibrox.

Accrington Stanley pair Matt Crooks and Josh Windass and Liverpool midfielder Jordan Rossiter have already agreed to make the move north of the border this summer.

And now Barton is set to join them in Warburton’s squad after agreeing a deal that will see him become an integral part of the manager’s plans in the coming years.
