Police said six cars, a bus and the truck were involved in the accident, which happened in the Fernhill Road area of Rutherglen shortly after 11am.

Eyewitnesses reported they believed the lorry’s brakes had failed as it travelled down a steep hill and it was trying to avoid the other vehicles on the road.
The impact of the crash reportedly forced the digger to slide off the back of the lorry.
One witness said the car under the digger had been crushed beyond all recognition.
An eyewitness at the scene said: “The digger fell off the back of the truck and fell on top of a car with two people inside.
“It’s horrific, the digger crushed the car.”
Another man at the scene told the Rutherglen Reformer: “One of the big lorries was carrying a digger on the back of it and it has toppled on to a car."
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they sent five appliances to the scene.
Police erected a large tarpaulin sheet around the vehicles while they investigated the scene and cordoned off a section of the road.
It was expected to remain closed for most of the day.

First Bus confirmed that one of its vehicles had been at the scene when the crash happened.
A statement said: “We can confirm one of our vehicles was caught up in the incident at Fernhill Road earlier today and we are providing assistance to the emergency services.”

The accident happened at the entrance to the works site for the Cathkin Relief Road, a scheme being carried out by Land Engineering.

A spokesman for Land Engineering said: “This serious accident on Fernhill Road took place close to the boundary of our site where we are building the new Cathkin Relief Road.

“We were deeply saddened to hear of the tragic outcome and our sincerest sympathies are with the families and friends of all those affected.
