POLICE are keen to speak to witnesses after sick thugs left a pensioner battered and bruised.

William Todd was pounced on as he walked home from the pub on Saturday afternoon at around 5.30pm.

Police say he left the number 26 bus on Golspie Street in Govan and was approached by two men who attacked him.

The two men, who were wearing dark clothing, then ran off south along Golspie Street.

The victim was assisted by members of the public who called an ambulance.

The man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment to facial injuries.

Detective Constable Gordon Reid, from Govan CID, said: “This was a disgusting and cowardly attack on an elderly man who had been out enjoying an afternoon with his friends.

“In particular I would like to speak to a man who was seen getting off the bus after the victim, which had been travelling west from Govan Road.

"He is described as white, between 35 and 40 years old, with short dark hair and glasses.

"He was wearing a brown jacket, dark trousers, and was carrying shopping bags.

“I would also like to speak to the members of the public who went to the victim’s aid as they may have information that could assist with our enquiries."

The pensioner, who has lived in the nearby sheltered housing complex for three years, remembers very little from the attack according to his wife Louise.

Louise, who has been married to William for over 60 years, said: "I am just getting over it. His face is a complete mess.

"He doesn't remember much but he said he felt something coming at him and that was it.

"No one has ever bothered me or my husband before this."

Glasgow Times:

The father-of-seven is regular at The Red Lion bar in Kinning Park's Paisley Road West who shared a shocking picture of the wounds of his attack on Facebook.

The grandfather - William also has seven grandchildren - has drank at the pub since it opened 27 years.

Eileen Wilson, who is the manageress, said: "He has been coming here for 27 years and he told me what happened on Sunday morning when we opened.

"I don't think it was football related. It was just an opportunist thief.

"He is a great wee man and this could effect him a long time.

"I am disgusted by what happened, and someone somewhere must have seen something."

A page has been set up to raise money for William following the attack, and so far over £975 has been raised for the pensioner.

Those behind the page said: "Willie is a gentleman who has a heart condition and who thankfully survived the shock and pain of a sever assault.

"As you can see from the disturbing photo, he was physically attacked and robbed of money in broad daylight in the town he has lived in all his life.

"I am asking the good people who read this to help with anything they can to enable Willie to go someway to restore his faith in the human race.

"I hope that this can go a small way to let him know that people do care and want to help him.

"In turn I hope this can help him to restore his confidence to be able to continue to go about his business without any fear."
