A DECISION to force a Glasgow aid charity to pay rent on is warehouse has been branded shambolic in the House of Commons.

Yesterday the Evening Times reported Glasgow the Caring City would be moving out of its premises in Castlemilk because landlord City Property will increase its rent from a peppercorn of £1 to £40,000

The charity collects and stores supplies including clothing, goods and equipment to be shipped around the world to people in need from the Glasgow centre.

City Property an Aleo of Glasgow City Council did not want to discuss the matter for “commercial” reasons after saying the charity choose not to renew its lease.

Stewart McDonald, Glasgow South SNP MP, condemned the treatment and called for a debate on how councils across the UK deal with organisations like the Caring City.

He said: “The only international aid agency in Glasgow will close its doors this week because of a decision of the shambolic Aleo controlled by the Labour party to hike its rent by 400,000%.”

He asked: “Can we have a debate on the unaccountability of Aleos across the UK and how they treat charities across the UK.”

Therese Coffey, deputy leader of the house, said: I’m not sure this is a matter for the Government, it’s more a local issue, but he’s right to use the house to raise the matter.”

The charity has sent aid to refugees in camps in Europe and to people after natural disasters all over the world.

Mr McDonald said later: “Glasgow the Caring City has projected the best of Glasgow on to the world. “They have helped thousands of people around the world who have suffered at the hands of armed conflicts and natural disasters.

“The shambolic body that is City Property has a record of putting voluntary organisations and small businesses in dreadful situations such as this. I’m glad to see that SNP councillors have taken the matter up with the council and hope Glasgow the Caring City gets the support it needs to continue making the valuable contribution that it does on behalf of our great city.”
