FOOTBALL fans can literally go for gold when a replica Lisbon Lions trophy goes under the hammer.

The nine carat commemorative Coupe Des Clubs Champions Europeens is expected to fetch between £15,000 and £20,000 when it appears at McTear’s Works of Art auction later this month in Glasgow.

The solid gold trophy marks nearly 50 years of the anniversary of Celtic’s historic European Cup 2 -1 win against Inter Milan.

Standing at 26cm high, the replica cup was commissioned by the Club in 1967 and presented to chairman Bob Kelly. It has an engraved gold band inscribed with the names of the 15 players who, after beating Inter Milan, were immortalised as the Lisbon Lions.

Also on sale is a 1910/11 Scottish Cup winner’s medal won by left back Joseph Dodds in Celtic’s win over Hamilton.

Joe, a Scottish Internationalist is considered one of the best and fastest defenders the club has produced.

The medal, which is expected to fetch up to £1,000, was presented by Joe to a local nurse as a way of thanks for helping his brother, Private James Dodds after he was injured in the Quintinshill Rail Disaster in 1915.

The tragedy claimed more than 200 lives, most of them Scottish soldiers heading to Gallipoli.

Both the trophy and medal will feature in The Works of Art Auction at McTear’s in Glasgow on Tuesday.

McTear’s managing director Brian Clements said: “Celtic’s European Cup win was a legendary British sporting event and one which every football fan in this country knows about. This replica gold trophy is the perfect way for a Celtic fan to celebrate the Golden Anniversary of the win next year and we expect there will be interest from across the globe in this one off piece.

“Joe Dodds is a Celtic great who was part of a defence that was described as the best in the UK at the time. Despite the First World War intervening and disrupting his career, he won an array of medals and this particular Scottish Cup winning medal has a heartwarming backstory that will appeal to many people.”
