The acclaimed artist and Oscar-nominated film director, Julian Schnabel, has donated work to an auction in New York which will raise money for the Glasgow School of Art.

Schnabel, director of Before Night Falls and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, has contributed a collage to the Mackintosh Campus Appeal auction.

The work, Glasgow School of Art Needs You, has been specially made for the auction.

Schnabel's paintings are held in public and private collections across the world including Metropolitan Museum; the Museum of Modern Art; the Guggehiem Museum; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

In 2007 Schnabel designed Lou Reed’s “Berlin” tour and directed the associated film, Berlin, The Movie.

Alasdair Nichol, vice chair of Freeman's auctioneers, said: "It speaks volumes about Glasgow School of Art’s standing within the international art world that an artist as celebrated as Julian Schnabel has created this unique work specifically for the Gala auction in NYC.

"I look forward to an exciting evening of bidding".

Professor Tom Inns, director of the Glasgow School of Art (GSA), added: "It is wonderful news that Julian has donated a work to tonight’s auction.

"We are hugely grateful to all the people who have so generously donated works to both the silent and public auctions to help us in our efforts to recover from the fire and bring the Mackintosh Building back as the heart of our expanded Garnethill Campus."

The GSA has launched the Mackintosh Campus Appeal in the US this week with a range of events in NYC including a lecture last night by leading Mackintosh authority, Prof. Pamela Robertson.

It was revealed earlier this week that items made by the joint heads of Silversmithing & Jewellery at the GSA , Helen Marriott and Anna Gordon, incorporating material from the Mackintosh Building, and a limited edition photograph of The Beatles with by Harry Benson were among the lots in the auction.
